Natural Fibre Blankets - The Benefits

We know that you want to do the very best for your baby, which is why we only sell natural fibre blankets. There are many cheaper alternatives but they come and a price to your baby and the environment.

Wool

Wool is often considered a luxury but has been used by man for thousands of years for very good reason. It is 100% natural and doesn’t contain any of the petroleum-based chemicals used in the manufacture of manmade fibres. It is hypoallergenic because it is resistant to bacteria and fungus, which is a leading cause of asthma in children.

Wool has natural temperature-balancing qualities, which means it keeps your child warm in winter and cool in summer. It wicks moisture away from the body and enables it to evaporate. This also helps to repel dust mites, as they need moisture to survive. Dust mite faeces is another major trigger of asthma.

Wool is naturally fire retardant because it doesn’t burn, even when touched with a naked flame. Most manmade fibres are treated with fire retardant chemicals, which are banned in many countries because of their health risk. Wool doesn’t need this treatment so is chemical-free.

No animals are harmed in the harvesting of wool (apart from perhaps the odd slip of the shears). Shearing is essential for keeping sheep healthy and with all the health benefits to you and the animals, wool remains one of the most eco-friendly materials on the planet. We use 100% wool in our knitted wool toddler and baby blankets, making them a safe and environmentally sound new baby gift that will last for many years to come.

Cotton

Cotton gets a lot of bad press due to the use of synthetic fertilizers in its production. We source the cotton for our blankets from responsible cotton producers, which reduces the impact on the environment.

Like wool, cotton has many advantages that come from it being a natural fibre. It is also hypoallergenic because it is resistant to bacteria and fungus. Cotton also wicks moisture away from the skin and can take up to one fifth of its weight in water before it feels damp. This allows your child’s skin to breathe as it does naturally. Cotton has unique properties of high tensile strength, durability and absorbency and is soft and comfortable against the skin.

Due to the way cotton is spun, it does not create static electricity when rubbed against the skin, as many man-made fibres do. Static electricity causes fabric to attract dust and animal hair and allows dust mites to exist in the fabric. Cotton eliminates these problems and provides a naturally healthy and comfortable fabric which we make our cotton baby blankets. Our customers most often buy them as new baby gifts and they are assured of a healthy and natural product that’s safe and healthy.
